Keyword research does work.

Let us start at the beginning. You have a product and you have a web page promoting this product or service. Or you only promote other people's products and you do not even have your own web page, but you are sending customers directly to them. In all these situations, you still need to know the exact key words that your prospective buyers will use to search for this information. You must remember that most of these customers do not yet know that they are your possible customers! They are looking for information about something or they have a problem with something and need help with it. You have to find the words that they use to search for this information and it is not always what you think it will be.

Your site might have the final solution to make more money, millions more, but most people are just looking to make $1000 more per month or they are just looking for ways to increase their sales with 5%. They will not type the phrase: "how can I make a Million" no, but they might use the following: "how can I increase my sales" or "how can I lower my ppc cost".

Give good answers to these questions and they might be interested in your ultimate money making solution. It is much easier to work with a targeted group of customers than with a group with general interests. The same is true when you work with keywords. Find the most targeted key words first and then put them in further sub-groups which bring them together even further. In the past every-one used Overture Suggestion Tool but it is not very useful any more because the data is years old. I have found a new free tool that works like a bomb and is quick and easy to use. You can find it at: Keyword Discovery

You can subscribe to this service which will give you several more options like to see how the popularity of a specific word or phrase changes over a year and where it is searched for the most. Even though Google is the most popular search engine, the word can be searched far more on Yahoo.

The free version will give you a list of 100 keywords for your seed keyword. It will also give you a number. This number is the total number of times that each key word or phrase have been used the past year. You have to divide this number with 365 to get the daily search figure for each keyword. I have found that these figures are really very useful and give you a very good estimate of what you can expect with a Google Adwords campaign. Remember that the search number is a total for all the search engines for a year.

* Tip - Take the top ten keywords from your first search results and type them in again.

You will be amazed at the number of relevant keywords this will produce. For the less computer literate of us - you can select the first ten keywords and paste them in notepad or wordpad. Then select one at a time, copy and paste into Keyword Discovery. Again copy the first ten (or just these with numbers higher than 360) and paste them into the same notepad file. In the end you will have a list of several hundred of keywords.

* Tip - Save this list because we will use it even for the keywords that are not relevant.

Now go through your list and select the most relevant keywords for your product or service. Do not try to choose the ones that would suit you the best, but keep in mind what the normal person would search for if they have a problem that you can solve with your product. Choose more than less but discard single or even two word keywords. Normally they are too general and it is a proven fact that serious information seekers will use more words to describe their search more specific. You do not want the casual browser to click on your ad. It will just cost you money and they will definitely not buy anything or even opt-in to your list. Get it in your head that it is not the number of clicks that count, but the number of clicks that buy!

Group all similar keywords together - this mean keywords that contain at least two of the same exact words in the same order.

Example: Say you are promoting a White Paper Ecourse.

Keywords for first Adgroup:
